ModWood Forest

Project Details

The Issue

Deforestation driven by construction remains one of the most pressing challenges in an already resource-intensive industry. ModWood offers a more sustainable alternative; a circular material that reduces pressure on the world’s forests.

The Solution

Grounded in the principles of the circular economy, ModWood repurposes plastic and wood waste from other industries into high-performance building products. This approach keeps waste out of landfill and spares standing forests from being felled.

The Reasoning

This showroom embodies that philosophy. Its circular form reflects the closed-loop nature of the brand’s process, demonstrating how ModWood products can replace conventional timber. The space also serves as an educational platform, offering clients, customers, and passersby insight into the realities of the lumber industry and the case for change

Ecological Aims.

1. Community & Place

Connect visitors to the local landscape by incorporating flora native to Mt Coot-tha, supported by informative plaques that foster a sense of community and belonging.

2. Education Through Interaction

Introduce visitors to circular design through interactive pillars, and integrated plaques that explain the function and benefits of the circular economy, as well as the properties of different ModWood varieties.

3. Design for Disassembly

Create a space that can be fully deconstructed and repurposed at the end of its use. All planks area reusable and fixed solely through their original mounting points, allowing them to be reinstalled in a clients’ home if required.

4. Biophillic Connection

Draw people closer to nature through biomorphic forms: nature-inspired symbolism, organic flowing planter beds, and a boardwalk reminiscent of a bushwalk, paired with a hollow entry log and living brush.

5. Passive Design

Reduced energy demand through passive strategies, including openable windows for natural ventilation, enlarged glazing, skylights for full-daylighting, and exposed concrete surfaces for thermal mass.

Product Integration

The showroom utilises the ModWood KlevaKlip system, a method of hidden brackets as a mounting system. This not only provides a practical advertising method to show potential clients, but allows the site to be completely dismantled. It works in collaboration traditional construction for the supporting frames, allowing all ModWood boards to be repurposed in the future.

Nightingale Floorboards

The only boards modified would be the ModWoods converted to the Nightingale Floorboards, as shown in the diagram below. This would provide an organic bird sound as users traverse the space, voiding any need for technology to bring the feeling of nature audibly in to the space.
